Abstract

The French translation of “Things Fall Apart” is a beautiful attempt aimed at showing different aspects of the Igbo culture, the people colonial experiences to the French world. Translated in 2013 by Pierre Girard, “le Monde s’effondre” facilitates a mutual relationship between the Igbo and the French people. But this translation is replete with many challenges as a result of the translator’s insufficient knowledge of the Igbo culture. Indeed a good and adequate translation of a typical cultural novel like things fall apart requires a mastery and familiarization of not just the two languages involved but, also indebt knowledge of both cultures. This study highlight the cultural exigencies and problems of translating Chinua Achebe’s novel,” Things Fall Apart” to French language and suggest some possible solutions.
